About RSPCA Queensland
For nearly 140 years, RSPCA Queensland has been a leading animal welfare charity, dedicated to improving the lives of animals - whether domestic, farmed, or native. We care for over 42,000 animals annually, relying on the generosity of animal lovers like you to fund 91% of our life-changing services.
Our Purpose: We exist for animals to live better lives.
About the Role
As a Veterinary Nurse / Animal & Customer Care Attendant based in Townsville, you’ll play a hands-on role in supporting animals and the people who care for them across the community.
This is a varied, purpose-driven position that blends clinical support, community outreach and shelter-based care. You’ll help coordinate and support surgical components of our community programs, work closely with pet owners to improve animal health and welfare, and assist with the day-to-day care and rehoming of animals within the shelter.
Working alongside our Animal Care, Veterinary and People & Pets Program teams, you’ll be part of a collaborative, mission-driven environment focused on prevention, education and improving outcomes for animals across the region.
What We’re Looking For
You’re someone who genuinely cares - about animals, people, and the communities they’re part of.
You’re confident working both independently and as part of a team, and you bring a calm, organised and proactive approach to your work. You’re just as comfortable supporting surgical and clinical tasks as you are having conversations with pet owners, volunteers or community members - always leading with empathy, clarity and respect.
You enjoy variety in your day, take pride in doing the small things well, and are motivated by being part of something bigger which improves the lives of animals through education, care and connection.
What You’ll Do
In this role, you will:
- Support the delivery of community and prevention programs alongside the Community Liaison Officer.
- Coordinate bookings and communication for clients requiring veterinary care.
- Assist with surgical program coordination and veterinary nursing support.
- Liaise with regional veterinary partners and participate in People & Pets program activities.
- Provide education and guidance to pet owners on animal health, care and welfare.
- Support inspectorate and community-based initiatives as required.
- Assist with shelter operations including animal care, cleaning, adoption support and foster coordination.
- Support the preparation, treatment and ongoing care of animals for rehoming.
- Provide guidance and support to volunteers to ensure high standards of care.
- Assist with animal transport when required.
- Deliver clear, compassionate communication to staff, volunteers and members of the public.
What You’ll Bring to the Role
- Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (or Australian recognised equivalent).
- Minimum 3 years’ veterinary nursing experience.
- Previous surgical nursing experience (highly regarded).
- Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage empathetically with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Confidence using Microsoft Office (particularly Outlook and Excel).
- A collaborative mindset, with the ability to support and guide others.
- Physical capability to perform manual handling tasks (including lifting up to 10kg).
- A genuine passion for animal welfare and alignment with RSPCA Queensland’s mission and values.
